ASSIGNMENT 3:
Play &
The Act of Play
For this project, we were assigned to create a toy for children in a remote and rural area based on a given body part whilst portraying the role of a non-governmental organisation member.
Week 9(I): Empathy
In the first week, I started my research on all the aspects of play and the act of play, along with my assigned body part(a): chest and abdomen. To be frank, I was quite frustrated with my assigned body part as it was very hard compared to the other body parts that my classmates had gotten. However I solely focused on researching as much as I could before commencing the other stages. Unfortunately, when searching for inspiration, the results were rather inappropriate, therefore, causing difficulty in sparking any ideas.
Week 10(II): Define
During this week, I took my time to analyse my findings and concluding my aims as well as providing an indication of a specific target user. With a clearer view, I felt more assured in what I was doing - some ideas started to form into place!

PROGRESS
Week 11(III): Ideate
In this week, I focused on brainstorming three of my ideas: PINGBALL BOX, KIM'S ANATOMY, and FLOSSBALL. Personally, I found it quite fun coming up with these ideas. I tried my best to think of toys that could somewhat respond to the chest in a way - the chest and abdomen do not have
Week 12(IV): Prototype
This week was the most chaotic week in my opinion. The process of making it was easy but testing out the toy was very difficultas the chosen idea(PINGBALL BOX) did not work out. It was pretty sad for me because I felt that my effort was put to waste. Luckily, I managed to resort to the second idea(KIM'S ANATOMY.)
Week 13(V): Presentation
As one of the first presenters, I made sure everything was on the right track - pulling an all-nighter was definitely not fun!
Despite the lack of sleep, the presentation went smoothly in my opinion. Everything was just fine, which made that all-nighter worth it!
REFLECTION
As this was the final assignment of the Critical & Creative Thinking Skills module, it definitely stood out the most to me. Of course, like usual, I learnt many things about children and the importance of play. However, this assignment has also shown me how necessary play and the act of play in every aspect of life.

What surprised me was how I managed to finish in time before the presentation. In the beginning, I did not know how a toy could respond to the chest or abdomen at all! It was very frustrating as the existing examples of a chest and abdomen toy were deemed inappropriate... Which left me clueless on where to begin.

Among the two prototypes that I made, I find that KIM'S ANATOMY is the most creative. The colours and educational values it comes with is very fun! As well as that, it was easy to make, unlike PINGBALL BOX which was a leg sore.

In my pursuit of coming up with a suitable toy for children in remote and rural areas for their chest and abdomen led me to learning more on the how the dexterity of children develop throughout their years of growth. As someone who dislikes children, I have come to realise and understand why they behave in a certain way which has enabled me to be more patient with them.

From this assignment, I believe that it was the most beneficial to me out of all three assignments done in this module. Indeed I would find myself frustrated and lost, however, my determination kept me going to where I am today, all thanks to this module! I am truly grateful for having Mr.Paul and Ms.Sarah for guiding me and being such insightful beings.
