PROJECT 2(B):

The Investigation

of Urban Space

For this project, we were assigned to work in groups to study urban space whilst presenting it onto an infographic poster. This project is split into 2 parts: Part A - urban, suburban and rural investigation; Part B - the investigation of a given urban space.

Week 11(I): Planning & Researching Part A

As this assignment was the first time where we got to choose our own group members, it was an exciting start. Especially since none of my friends and I have been in the same group before! We immediately texted each other and created a WhatsApp group as quickly as we could. After so, we began delegating the workload as well as crafting the timeline to track our progress.

When it came to choosing which location we planned to investigate, each of us gave examples and we ended up with Kuala Lumpur City Centre(urban), Taman Dato' Ahmad Razali(suburban), and last but not least Kampung Pachitan(rural). When it came to choosing a rural site, many rural areas have insufficient information required to carry out an investigation of its respective spaces, which enabled us to further our findings by researching on several other rural areas. Despite our chosen rural area, Ming Yee still had to ring up the council to obtain information on the estimate population!

We then proceeded by sharing different ideas of composition before Shi Pei would begin the Canva layout. It was much more fun now that we were together working as a team!

Week 12(II): Part B's Research & Part A's Canva

As we were off to a good start, we began compiling pins on a Pinterest board for Shi Pei to get inspiration from. While Shi Pei had her part, the rest of us had the roles of summarising and writing the information in our own words to avoid any sort of plagiarism.

The feedback given by our tutor, Mr.Paul, was that our information was only touching the surface. We wanted to dive in deeper to procure as much information as possible. Thus, we heightened the neighbourhood context as well as more elaborations were written in detail for the other topics.

For Part B, we were given the location of La Rambla, Barcelona, Spain. We found it very intriguing as we finally got to research some place other than Malaysia! Before we started to investigate La Rambla, we decided that we should read Kevin Lynch's book which was highly recommended by Mr.Paul. Furthermore, we also googled the necessary details and aspects that we have to take note of before carrying out our investigation. This really deepened our understanding on how a site analysis would work.

Week 13(III): Amending, Summarising, & a little bit of PhotoShop!
Week 14(IV): Part B's Canva

More or less this week was all about the modification of our Part B's poster.

PROGRESS

In this week, Ming Yee and Shi Pei began editing the maps on PhotoShop, whilst Andrew, Jaylene and I carried on with the information. I was in charge of correcting errors in the texts whilst Andrew and Jaylene obtained more research.

Week 15(V): Touching & Checking Ups

The final week came and from the feedback given, Mr.Paul suggested that the poster should be less rigid, and so, Shi Pei worked her magic and produced amazing results. Ming Yee also did her fair share of a gorgeous map. â€‹

For the final check up, I went through the texts multiple times to ensure no repeated information is seen and that it is as readable as it is understandable.

REFLECTION

From the in-depth findings we discovered, I was able to understand the professional practice within the field of study of La Rambla Street.

With the restriction of MCO, doing this project online has given me the ability to communicate appropriately in various settings and modes.

Since we could pick our own group members, I was able to understand the team dynamics and the mobilisation of teamwork.

I was able to understand the format of Canva better as well as how to extract specific information through the internet.

All in all, this project was immensely fruitful. I could not have done it without everyone in the group. I am proud of our work and very satisfied with the team's contribution. Not only was it insightful, but it was very enjoyable as I got to work with my friends!
