PROJECT 1:
Designer's Journey; Elements of Design
For this assignment, the first part required us to photograph 15 monochromatic pictures of natural and man-made elements present in our respective households. These were then documented into a 20-page accordion booklet included with our observations of written interpretation and visual research of the chosen objects.
The second part we were to conduct visual research and analysis on Pablo Picasso’s Guernica artwork on an A3 paper.
Week 2(I): A Stay-At-Home Photoshoot
For the first week, we were given time to capture different objects that fall into the categories of natural and man-made elements. This task made me step outside and appreciate my surroundings.
Week 3(II): Drafting & Researching
After printing out the pictures, I researched various ways on how to construct an accordion booklet. Due to the pandemic, it was rather difficult to obtain the necessary materials in order to carry out this project, thus it took a while before I could properly begin with the manual work. Thus, I digitally documented the literature and drafted the layout of each page in the meantime.
For the Guernica analysis, I began researching Pablo Picasso and the painting’s information to gain a deeper understanding. I then drafted the layout and wrote down my personal analysis of each element found in Guernica.
Week 4(III): Getting Down To Business
PROGRESS
Once the materials were in my keeping, I immediately transferred my online material onto the accordion booklet. Sketching with different types of media was fun to experiment especially since everything was black and white in colour.
The Guernica was the most fun to draw out as the shapes and figures were very unusual and abstract.
REFLECTION
My intellectual engagement was truly insightful. I was able to locate, extract, synthesise and utilise the information I obtained from various resources via the internet.
I was given the ability to reflect on my actions by managing my time efficiently as well as refining self-reliance.
This assignment has taught me how to view elements that are present in the moment. It was very intriguing to find beauty in almost everything. I felt a great sense of wonder in my work which made me appreciate the importance of this module as a start.
