PROJECT 3:
Head Garment
Design
For this project, we were to design a head garment that can be transformed into 2 different forms. The origin of the concept must derive from our individual personalities to portray a series of emotions symbolising personal experiences. We were required to include movable, overlapping mechanisms taken from natural and man-made elements.
Before coming up with a design I scavenged around the house to acquire potential materials. After rummaging around I came across many leftover hardware components from nuts to wires, hose clamps to wire wheel brushes. I never knew I could find these elements in my household. After collecting a fair amount of potential materials, I then began sketching my ideas.
The Foundation
Every head garment requires a base from which to build. In order to incorporate The Fibonacci series within my composition, I had to utilise metal wires to create the head garment grid. Painstakingly, I twisted thick wires into a skeleton of my design. This is the most crucial point as the base needed to be really secure.
The Bionic Claw
PROGRESS
As this was the primary mechanism, each and every inch had to be calculated carefully in order to produce the desired outcome. After doing so, I cut out the parts, straws, strings and cardboard and stuck them together. Applying this mechanism was rather challenging as attaching it to the grid to ensure utmost fitting was very tedious.
The Lobe Coral X Guitar String Crown
This crown was made out of two wires intertwined with one another along with a bundle of frilly ombre string to give an ocean- wave effect.
Lionfish Frills
Working with what I had, I painted zipties in vermillion red and tied it onto the base aligned with the crown.
I decided to showcase the leaf shutter by attaching various sizes of hose clamps with bolts and washers rhythmically.
The Looking Shutter Glass
The Huffman Waterbomb
I folded this tessellation into a crossed intersection of two perpendicular pleats. When deployed, it expands outward in all directions elevating and rotating simultaneously. It was very challenging to fold however I wanted to try out this unique pattern discovered by Ron Resch.
The Details
Adding a black cloth, hose clamps, wiring and mini door hinges, I intricately focused on this head garment from top to bottom.
REFLECTION
My intellectual engagement was truly insightful. I was able to locate, extract, synthesise and utilise the information I obtained from various resources via the internet.
I was given the ability to reflect on my actions by managing my time efficiently as well as refining self-reliance.

This assignment has given me self-awareness on who I am as an individual. I enjoyed exploring elements relating to my personality type, ENFJ.
